Lyrics to Live By: Hollyn, “Nothin’ On You”

This song was a huge summer hit and it’s still on my playlist to this day. It’s a must-have, and not just for the addictive, catchy beat; it’s really the words that make this song a fave of mine:

I don’t care what they say
Cause they gon’ talk anyway
I don’t care what they do
Cause they ain’t got nothin’ on You

You got that something I want and I crave
Driving me sane
A grace so amazing
People keep sayin’ I’m crazy
But they ain’t got nothin’ on You

This is actually my first #lyricstoliveby post. I really wanted to have this category because I think music is so powerful and as Christians, music can be a great tool to assist us in our walk with God.

The singer of “Nothin’ On You,” Hollyn, (Holly Marie Miller) is signed to Christian artist tobyMac’s label Gotee Records, alongside the likes of Jamie Grace, Capital Kings, and Finding Favour. Needless to say, she’s definitely in good company.

Hollyn’s self-titled EP really showcases her range and the fact that she isn’t stylistically limited. Plus, her vocal chops are definitely top notch. The single “Nothin’ On You” is all about realizing that nothing and no one can take the place of God: our Father, Lord, and Savior.

The devil will use anything and anyone he can to compete for your attention: family, friends, relationships, or even your own responsibilities and desires. All of those things have their place, but as Christians, we must always remember to keep God first in our lives. After all, He is a jealous God (Deut. 4:24) and He won’t settle for second place!

Some of my favorite lyrics are, Might have a million dollars in the bank/30 cars with a yacht on the lake/Just ’cause you got it don’t mean you gotta flaunt it/He’s the one who paid the price, yeah He bought it”

Has anyone ever tried to impress you with their possessions? Just know that there’s absolutely nothing wrong with having nice things— in fact, you should want nice things because God wants us to prosper! But we should always remember to stay humble and only boast in the Lord, not in ourselves. It is from Him whom all blessings flow, and without His grace and mercy, we are and could do nothing. And if you don’t have some of the finer things that you see others with, don’t get jealous or envious. Tell God all about your desires and just follow His will for your life. Your blessings and your success are in doing what GOD wants you to do, not in chasing the dollar.

Lastly, Jesus says in Matthew 22:37, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” (ESV).

When we strive to love God like this, we’ll be so close to Him that nothing will ever come between. So take that with you today, and let’s keep God where He belongs:

First.
